Ergonomics for the Construction Industry

If you think ergonomics is something that applies only to the height of your computer screen and the angle of your wrists and arms while you’re typing—think again.

Ergonomics is about improving efficiency in the work environment. Any work environment. And for the construction industry, efficiency is key to getting the job done right, on time, and on budget.

Wondering how ergonomics can improve your team’s efficiency? Check out these tips.

  • Use tools to make work easier on your body. Instead of bending at the waist for long periods of time, set up sawhorses or a bench to support the work at a comfortable working height—or sit on a supportive seat so you can easily work at a lower level. Likewise, if you have to work overhead, stand on a platform or ladder so you are on a level with your work.
  • Choose ergonomic tools. There is a wide spectrum of tools available today, so you can choose tools that are lighter to lift, well balanced, and have handles that make them easy to grip—all of which makes them easier on you.
  • Keep your tool belt balanced. Do you tend to carry more tools on one side of your body than the other? That can pull your back out of alignment. Remember not to load your tool belt with more tools than you need, to remove your tool belt when you take a break, and to leave it off altogether if you don’t really need it.
  • Use proper techniques when lifting, moving heavy loads, and shoveling. You know what to do: lift with your legs, push rather than pull, and don’t twist from the waist—instead, lift your feet and turn hips and body in the direction you’re shoveling, moving materials, and so on.
  • Identify risk factors. Take time to consider the tasks at hand and identify which of the above techniques you’ll need to employ to get the job done—without getting hurt.
