Creating a culture of safety protects workers and keeps California workers comp claims down.

Build a Culture of Safety

Each day, more than 16,000 U.S. workers experience illness or injury in the workplace—and it’s no surprise that when the workplace is a construction site, injuries are far too common. In 2012, there were 210 construction-related fatalities in the United States—making construction one of the most dangerous industries.

A thorough Injury and Illness Prevention Program will help to keep employees safe on the job, but in addition to developing and implementing an IIPP, contractors need to nurture a culture of safety. When all workers come together to identify and manage hazards, to maintain good housekeeping, and to communicate issues with management, the sense of camaraderie and improved morale gives the entire workplace a boost.

A culture of safety can help contractors

  • Save money. A workplace that prevents injury also enjoys lower claims costs, positively impacting its workers’ compensation rates and premium.
  • Improve morale. Contractors that work to keep employees safe and healthy demonstrate that they care about those employees.
  • Increase productivity. A safe workplace is an efficient workplace—and safe, healthy employees are productive employees.

So don’t simply develop an IIPP and think you’ve done your job. Strive to develop a culture of safety and encourage all employees to contribute to that culture. Your efforts will yield great dividends.
